Yoda on Goal Setting

Do. Or do not. There is no try.

Luke struggling to lift his X-Wing out of the swamp on Dagobah is one of the most memorable scenes in the iconic movie Star Wars: A New Hope.

Master Yoda watches on and only offers help in the form of advice. Luckily for Luke, it is a very powerful piece of wisdom and it helps him succeed.

The major lesson Yoda tries to teach Luke is that you are better off focusing on the present. He tries to get him to understand the necessity of maturing and focusing on what really matters.

Of all the lines from the movies, this one remains one of the most useful phrases for people in their everyday lives. Essentially, the line is a reminder to fully commit yourself to everything you do in life.

When you set your goals, you must be confident that you will achieve them. In order to do this, you must be willing to do hard work consistently. Simply sitting around thinking about your dreams is not enough.

Why Do I Need to Set Goals?

For any successful human being, having clear goals and working towards them is an important part of life. Although having these goals may lead to some pain and disappointment, they are an essential part of a happy and fulfilled existence. It is from our goals that we acquire our sense of purpose and ultimately accomplishment in life.

Goals help us decide what to do next in life.

Aristotle famously said, “well begun is half done.” This is especially true when it comes to goal setting. It is important to set goals that are achievable and having a good plan for accomplishing them from the beginning.

How to Set Goals and Achieve Them

Many people get frustrated because their goals never seem to get anywhere. This is likely because they never set up a clear plan for getting them done. This is why it is important to learn how to set your goals.

Granted, having a vision of what you are hoping to achieve is an important part of the process. There is nothing wrong with daydreaming about your goals. That is only one piece of the puzzle, however.

Every day you should be moving towards your goal. It will be much easier to do if you have a plan in place from the beginning.

Have a Vision

For some, it is easy to establish that they want a change but having specific goals is a challenge. It is crucial to have a vision that is rich in details before starting the work.

It is much easier to work towards your goals when you know exactly what you need to do and exactly why it is so worthwhile.

Separate Your Goals into Long-Term and Short-Term

In order to feel like you are making progress, it is a good idea to write your goals down in two lists: long-term and short-term. A long-term goal would be defined as something you want to accomplish in 5-10 years. For your short-term goals, set time limits like 3 months, 6 months, or a year.

By dividing your goals in that way, it can help prevent you from feeling overwhelmed and getting stuck. It is a great way to break your goals down into steps that have clear actions.

For instance, let’s say you want to buy a house. That would definitely qualify as a long-term goal. In order to do that, you will need to save up money as well as make sure your credit is in good standing. These things may take several years.

On the other hand, if you decide you want to give up gluten so that you have more energy, that is something you could accomplish as a short-term goal.

Feel as Though Your Goals Have Already Happened

The Law of Attraction (a.k.a. the Secret) is a popular tool for people when striving towards their goals. Even if you do not believe in manifestation, you can benefit from the main principle from the Law of Attraction: think about your goal as if it is something you are already achieved.

Why is this thought to work? The theory is that your subconscious mind is susceptible to the suggestion that you already have the skills and experience you need to attain your goals. This is said to attract good things to you.

Your subconscious has no way of knowing the difference between your reality and your dreams. In order to be successful in doing this, always write your goals down in the present tense. Try to feel as you would when accomplishing your goal as you write it down.

Goal Setting

There are many reasons that setting goals is important. They allow you to be in charge of your own destiny. They are also a way to make your progress as you move through life.

Once you have established what your goals are, you need to figure out how to move from Point A (where you are now) to Point B (where you will be when your goal is achieved.)

It is important to have well-thought-out steps and to be prepared to work hard every step of the way.

Set Goals that Motivate You

There is no reason to set a goal that doesn’t make you feel inspired. If they will have no large positive impact or don’t involve things that matter to you, goals will likely soon be forgotten.

Set SMART Goals

Have you ever heard of SMART goals? Using this guideline is a great way to make sure your goals are worthwhile and achievable. SMART stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time-Bound

Set Goals in Writing

Writing down a goal activates different parts of the brain than thinking or talking about one. It is a good way to make sure you remember them and to hold yourself accountable. Use positive words like “will” instead of “might” when writing down your goals.

Make an Action Plan

This is the step many people miss, leading to failure. Write down the specific steps you plan to take in order to accomplish your goal. This is extra important if it is a long-term goal. It is unreasonable to expect to simply wake up one day with your goal accomplished without having an action plan.

Stick With It!

Be ready to adjust your plan as time moves on as necessary, but never abandon it. Working towards your goals will be an ongoing activity. It is important to remind yourself often of what you are trying to accomplish and why.
